Hey, you! Yeah, you—the one with a sleeve of diamond-encrusted platinum APs and Richard Milles running up the length of your arm. Fancy some bugs in your teeth and some medium-to-severe tinnitus? Yeah? Well, you’re going to have to find some other way to both blow those hair implants out and one-up the 500-odd losers with the mass-produced Ferrari Monza SP, ’cause Lamborghini’s only making one of the new roadstertastic SC20 and You. Can’t. Have. It.
Those words must sting something fierce to a mogul or despot, but whoever ordered Lamborghini’s newest one-off creation is probably grinning ear-to-ear as they ready their 2021 tour schedule of slow cruises through, among other chi-chi locales, Monaco and down Rodeo Drive. This is the third one-off creation from Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse motorsports division, the first being the wild SC18 Alston from 2018. (The second was the Essenza SCV12 track car from earlier this year.) For its part, the SC18 is essentially a heavily rebodied Aventador SVJ, with the principle design and engineering undertaken by the same folks who handle the successful GT3 and Super Trofeo race cars, dramatically increasing the base SVJ’s downforce and on-track performance and giving it some serious Sesto Elemento vibes.
The SC20 expounds on this “more is more” with an extra dash of “less,” in this case losing both the car’s lid and windscreen and leaving the two terrified and exhilarated passengers wet, hot, cold, and windburned. Well, maybe not, according to Lambo. “The carbon-fiber body was polished and slicked down by hand by the Lamborghini aerodynamic engineers to deliver optimal airflow for both performance and the cockpit’s occupants, ensuring comfortable open-air driving even at high speeds.” Uh-huh.
This isn’t the first time the Aventador has lost both the roof and the front glass; readers might have already forgotten of the outlandish one-off open-aired Aventador J from 2013 that closely resembles the new SC20. Lambo cites that red barchetta as direct inspiration, alongside the Diablo VT Roadster, Veneno Roadster, and the Gallardo-based Concept S.
As a highly, highly reworked Aventador SVJ, the SC20 gets an entirely new set of carbon-fiber body panels and aero effects. Motivation still comes from the SVJ’s 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V-12, capped at the same 759 horsepower and 531 lb-ft of torque and similarly managed by the Aventador’s seven-speed single-clutch automatic transmission. With excessive use of carbon fiber and no roof to haul around, the SC20’s performance is likely moderately improved over the already whacko SVJ’s. Lambo isn’t talking numbers, but for reference, the SVJ hit 60 mph in 2.5 seconds when tested by our colleagues at MotorTrend.
When the owner finishes launch-controlling up and down his or her local riviera and makes it out to some of the more curvaceous backroads or on some private circuit, the benefits of Squadra Corse’s motorsports know-how will come to light. All that adjustable aero and the barely legal semi-slick tires probably add up to one incredibly tethered-down cornering experience, though we expect it would best be enjoyed on the smooth, safe tarmac of a racetrack rather than the open road.
Price? Well, considering the development and production of this unique four-wheeled wonder was funded entirely by one person, Lamborghini isn’t saying, nor is the identity of the noise and wind enthusiast revealed, but he or she will be hard to miss when they use the SC20 to go to the dentist or pick-up a prescription. (The SC18 is estimated to have run $7 million, so use that as your starting point.) Look for the SC20 to enter regular production never and land at local dealers sometime after the heat death of the universe.
