Aston Martin wowed the automotive world with the unveiling of the DB4 GT in late 1959. Based on the brand’s DB4 sports car, the GT adopted faired-in headlamps, a shorter wheelbase, and a handful of engine improvements. Whereas the DB4’s 3.7-liter straight-six produced approximately 240 hp, the GT’s engine made a smidge more than 300 horses.
Yet, the GT is not the pinnacle of DB4-dom. That honor goes to the DB4 GT Zagato, which debuted toward the end of 1960. Wrapped in slinky bodywork designed by famed Italian coachbuilder Zagato, this special DB4 had improved performance to match its looks. Credit the nearly dozen extra ponies in its engine’s stable, as well as an approximately 100-pound diet. If the DB4 GT was both beauty and beast, then the DB4 GT Zagato was both more beautiful and even beastlier.
With just 19 DB4 GT Zagatos produced, this Aston is a particularly rare breed. However, now’s your chance to call one of these sports coupes your own—provided you have the means.
In other words, this DB4 GT Zagato is no garage queen. The current owner, in fact, has added more than 30,000 miles to its odometer since purchasing the British sports car in 1985. Meanwhile, this Aston’s original owner put 15,000 miles on it throughout the course of his more than 20-year ownership. (Two other individuals also owned the car between the first and current owners. )
Despite its time on the road, this Aston looks absolutely stunning in the auction house’s accompanying photos. In fact, only the marks of previously removed weights from the car’s wire wheels and some wear (but nothing excessive) on the driver and front-passenger seats give away that this Zagato was routinely used for what it was designed to do: be driven.
Of course, such a rare and beautiful sports car doesn’t come cheap, and Gooding & Company estimates the car will sell for somewhere between $9.1 and $11.8 million once the gavel comes down. If you have that sort of coin, though, then we think this DB4 GT Zagato might just be a worthwhile investment. Just be sure to drive it every now and then.
